Paradise City A Joe Gunther Mystery Archer Mayor Tri William Dufris 9780792792314 Books

Over the years I've really enjoyed Joe Gunther's Vermont police procedural cases. Mr. Mayor really knows his Vermont and his locale descriptions are nicely written without being too lengthy and becoming boring. When the team has to go out of state the writing is still top notch with just the right amount of background history and physical lay of the land. All of this being said, he keeps the plot moving in interesting ways, never boring, yet a relaxing hour or so before sleep zzzzzzz. Paradise City maintains the series on a high level.
PS : I also enjoy the Virgil Flowers and Lucas Danforth series by John Sandford. They are a little more intense. Archer Mayor is in good company in my book ! JJB

Paradise City A Joe Gunther Mystery Archer Mayor Tri William Dufris 9780792792314 Books Reviews

living in Northampton with all its loveable quirkiness, his description of the downtown is on the mark. I especially loved it when he said that someone could walk down the main street in a Big BIrd outfit and no one would notice. I enjoyed the interaction of the three police forces, the characters of Joe and his associates and the malevolence of Ms Walker and her stooges. Interesting commentary on "forced labor" and the malfeasance of the supposed "liberators".

the pace is quick but not too fast. A good read. Look forward to reading more Archer Mayer and Joe Gunther novels.thanks
I have read almost all of Mayor's books, they are all good. This one was okay, not his best in my opinion.
Always terrific. This is probably my favorite series and I have now read everything out there and am anxiously waiting for more. Terrific character development. I suggest reading them in order but I'm sure that's not necessary for enjoyment... it does add to it though by seeing the characters grow and knowing what they came from.
Say it ain't so Joe! This is so sad, I am almost to the end of the Joe Gunther books. I need more. Joe Gunther is like a dear, old friend, and I want to read more about him. Archer Mayor has a wonderful, descriptive writing style that lets you picture what you are reading in great detail. Hope he never stops writing about this Vermont based investigator and hope I get to visit Vermont one day!
I haven’t read a bad Archer Mayor book yet, and this one didn’t break that string.

Mayor never fails to tell an engaging story, writing some of the best police procedurals on the market today. He brings the reality of police work – the tedium of a stakeout, the intensity of a shootout – alive. He also gives Joe Gunther and his fellow VBI agents lives outside the station house and balances both realistically.

Joe is back as the star of this story, but the loss that pretty much relegated him to the sidelines in <i>Tag Man</i> still weighs on his mind, coloring his thoughts and affecting some of his actions here.

I’m happy to see there are more books in this series and hope there are still more to come.
I've never read any of the Joe Gunther series, but this one takes place mostly in Northampton, MA - a place I lived in for a while in the 70's. I was pleasantly surprised to find interesting characters, a good plot, and multiple story lines that all pulled together in the end. One of the things I enjoyed about this book was the team concept. After reading quite a few police procedurals that focus on the work of mainly one person the teamwork was a pleasant change. And, this wasn't only one police team working together, but teams from Boston, Vermont and Northampton all contributing to solving the puzzle. In addition to very entertaining descriptions of the uniqueness that is Northampton, this story involved jewelry making, illegal immigration, basic petty theft and murder. That the author was able to pull this off in a completely believable plot is amazing in itself. But, he also managed to pull together a cast of characters I found myself enjoying and worrying about. The book also brought in some interesting internet and techy plot twists that made the story current and fun. Good dialogue, intriguing plot, interesting locale descriptions - an author worth reading.
I'd really like to give this novel 4 1/2 stars - I don't love it, but I really, really like it. It starts with a murder in Boston's Beacon Hill, then jumps to a heist in Vermont (thus engaging Joe Gunther in the plot), and eventually settles as a tale of inter-agency cooperation between the police in Boston, Northampton, MA, and the Vermont Bureau of Investigation. Along the way, there are illegal aliens, glimpses into the Lifestyles of the Rich and Brainless, and an amateur detective whose sheer obstinacy leaves one open-mouthed at her stupidity. Yet - she's the one who bumps my rating from a solid police procedural that I like to a can't-put-this-down, really fabulous read. Classic Archer Mayor well researched, smoothly written, intricate but well-thought-out plot, and - a minor detail, but not to an avid reader - grammatically flawless. I didn't think writers understood the conventions of writing anymore, but Mr. Mayor's books are always a pleasure to read for that alone.
