Thrive The Third Metric to Redefining Success and Creating a Life of WellBeing Wisdom and Wonder Arianna Huffington 0884723006958 Books
Thrive: The Third Metric to Redefining Success and Creating A Life of Wellbeing, Wisdom, and Wonder by Arianna Huffington is an important book about defining success and how you attain it. I wish it were a better book.If you are an aggressive, ambitious person who knows you’re working too hard and sacrificing important parts of life to your success, this book is for you. If you’re struggling to make ends meet or in a stage of life where you have both kids and a career, you’ll find a lot of what’s here gratuitous. It’s easy for someone who has attained both prestige and wealth by working hard and putting in long hours to tell you you shouldn’t work so hard and that money is not that important.
The core message is important, though. Decide what you want from your life and career. Measure your sacrifice against potential gain. If you’re in mid-career, aggressive, ambitious mode you should take better care of yourself and your relationships.
Too Much and Too Little
There is a lot of information here about living better. Alas, the author stacks studies one on top of another, mentioning each one, but not doing much to evaluate or connect them. She doesn’t give you much detail, either.
There are lots of good ideas here. That’s a plus. The author buries many of them under deadening prose, though. There’s too much about Arianna and her sister. There are far too many promotional mentions of The Huffington Post. If this is the only book you read, you might think The Huffington Post is the only media outlet in the world.
In A Nutshell
This book is for you if you think you work too hard and make the wrong kinds of sacrifices. There’s good information, and lots of pointers to more information. With all its faults, I think the first third of Thrive: The Third Metric to Redefining Success and Creating A Life of Wellbeing, Wisdom, and Wonder is worth the price of the book.
This book is not for you if you don’t have a lot of options. Don’t read this book if you’re working hard and not getting enough sleep or exercise or good nutrition because you don’t have much of a choice. You already know you need to sleep more, eat right, and exercise. You don’t need this book to tell you that.

Thrive The Third Metric to Redefining Success and Creating a Life of WellBeing Wisdom and Wonder Arianna Huffington 0884723006958 Books Reviews
This book reminds me what I already know, something that comes to me as a voice that stays there, always reminding me what is important, but I rarely listen.
I really liked the way the author shares her experience making it easy for me to relate to the content. But what I liked the most Is how compelled I feel to take action, stop surfing life and start Thriving right now.
I am thoroughly enjoying this book. If everyone would walk away with even some of the advice offered, the world would have less problems than it currently does. To me, the suggestions offered in this book are sensible and doable. It only requires that we learn what's really important in life and then setting that as a priority. I think Arianna Huffington is so on target with the need to reassess the importance of sleep, family/friend time, and wonder! Once we all learn that power and money are not the answer in and of themselves but to put the pursuit of same in its proper perspective, we'll all be so much better off. When you think about it, the need to use and abuse others in the pursuit of fame and fortune would melt away in the enjoyment of our own fulfillment with life. We'd spend more time enjoying ourselves, our spiritual nature and our loved ones. We'd have no interest in hurting or disappointing others because we'd understand we're all connected. We'd also view what we now perceive as our challenges as opportunities for growth. When you think about it, this is a most amazing way to live. It has further energized and encouraged me to pursue my life in this manner. I'm excited about the possibilities!
Weirdly academic...so much research. And for someone who is interested in research (me), that is saying something!
I did enjoy the stories about her family, especially her mom.
Absolutely loved this book.
Ended up getting copies for close friends and associates who are regularly "pushing the needle to the red" as Jon Anderson croons in It Can Happen.
Huffington's own exhaustive collapse set her on a new direction.
One of moving from a purely Alpha-driven state, to one where you cycle between driven=>reflection=>rest.
Repeat.
Few books on entrepreneurial balance do such a good job of escorting us through the process.
And she helps us address The Why. That's the big thing.
Once we know WHY we do things. Then the HOW becomes much more manageable.
Much more meaningful.
Don't look to this work as a how-to.
For that, might I offer Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz excellent guide in Energy Management (vs Time Management) The Power of Full Engagement. A brilliant piece on how to apply Huffington's prose in meaningful and manageable ways.
I also highly recommend SleepNutrients Sublingual SleepSpray as one tool to help address our Type-A personalities. A few sprays under the tongue, and the sheep will all but count themselves. You'll awake far more energized if you get the right kind of sleep, with good Delta and REM cycles performing Memory Consolidation and helping assist the brain in its natural detoxification cycles (there's a great TED talk on sleep as well - search for Jeff Iliff - One More Reason to Get a Good Night's Sleep - really helps explain how the cardiovascular system and the brain sync during sleep to make us healthier).
Huffington is clearly a master of her craft. And a passionate evangelist as well.
Enjoy the book.
More importantly - apply the lessons here.
The journey will be much more worthwhile.
ANd you'll be well-rested as you cross the finish line (however you define it).
It’s easy for millionaires to tell you money isn’t important .
